An airplane can act as something of a microcosm of humanity’s best – and worst – sides. There are heroic tales of bravery and fated meet-cutes on planes. And of course, the odd sense of community that arises between passengers randomly squeezed together in a confined space (often against a common enemy: the airline).
Yet travel can test anyone’s patience, and sometimes people seemingly forget all norms and rules of society while focused on getting where they need to go. In the digital era, these moments – good and bad – can take on a life of their own. Many frequent fliers have found themselves famous (or infamous) overnight due to a controversial or wild travel moment that was captured on film.
Whether it was a case of an overzealous airline, a rude seatmate, or both, vote up the stories where the viral person is most definitively in the right. Vote down the ones where they were way out of line.

- 3A Passenger Was Moved After Asking Their Seatmate To Wear A MaskRedditor u/Lex_Mariner went viral for a post on the United Airlines subreddit, detailing an encounter on their flight:I had a wet-coughing, sneezing, nose dripping lady sit next to me. I asked her quite civilly if she would consider wearing a mask. She immediately went off on a loud “you have no right” tirade and pushed the call button. I was reprimanded by the [flight attendant] for just making such a request… “You CANNOT ask another passenger to mask up!” I was reseated to a middle seat near the toilets in steerage and the lady took over my economy-plus aisle seat (my spouse was left across the aisle from her and caught a similar cold a few days later–coincidence?!) After I was reseated, a large enforcer came on the plane to ask me “are you going to be a problem?” My new seatmates must have wondered what minor felony I must have committed. The writer clarified that they did have their own mask that they put on, and also had a spare which they offered to the woman. They also said, I understand coughing, sneezing and nose blowing may be due to allergies or other afflictions. I would have been comforted had she just said, “I have allergies.”The top comments suggested the poster should bring a complaint to United, especially after being removed from their premium seat. Others recounted similar stories, while one pointed out that OP had merely made a request: “Of course you can ask a sick person to wear a mask. They are not obligated to do so, but asking them to do the right thing is not improper…” Still, some commenters thought the passenger was only entitled to concern themselves with their own mask.Ranked #3 by 2,481 voters with a 94% upvote rate2,481 votesOn their side?
