He Sold Pens on the Streets of Beirut to Feed His Children — Then One Photo Changed Everything

In 2015, on a busy street in Beirut, Lebanon, a father named Abdul Halim al-Attar was doing everything he could to provide for his children.

He stood among the passing cars, holding a handful of blue pens and offering them to strangers. Drivers hurried past, people went about their daily routines, and most barely noticed the man trying to earn enough money to feed his family.

But there was one detail that made his situation especially heartbreaking.

His little daughter was asleep on his shoulder.

While other children spent their days playing or resting at home, Abdul had to bring his daughter with him as he searched for a way to survive. He had very little money, few opportunities, and the enormous responsibility of making sure his children had something to eat.

Still, he kept going.

He didn’t know that a single photograph taken on that ordinary day would soon reach people thousands of miles away—and change the direction of his life.

A Photograph That Touched the World

The image eventually caught the attention of an Icelandic journalist named Gissur Simonarson. Moved by what he saw, Simonarson decided to find the father in the photograph and learn more about his circumstances.

He shared the image on social media and helped launch a fundraising campaign known as #BuyPens.

The idea was simple: instead of feeling sorry for a struggling father, people could do something practical to help him build a better future.

The response was extraordinary.

People from different countries, backgrounds, and walks of life came together to support a man they had never met. Donations began arriving, and a photograph that had once shown a father struggling on a Beirut street became a symbol of compassion and human generosity.

In just a few months, the campaign raised more than $188,000.

For Abdul and his family, the support represented far more than money. It meant the possibility of escaping the daily struggle to survive and creating a future in which his children could have greater security and opportunity.

For the first time in a long while, a different future seemed possible.

He Didn’t Stop at Changing His Own Life

What happened next made the story even more inspiring.

Rather than treating the donations simply as a way to get through another difficult month, Abdul used the opportunity to establish businesses and create a more stable source of income.

He opened a bakery in Beirut, followed by a kebab shop and a small restaurant.

These businesses gave him a chance to support his family through his own work. But his efforts also benefited other people who were struggling to find employment.

Abdul hired 16 workers, providing them with jobs and an opportunity to earn money for their own families.

The impact of the campaign was no longer limited to one father and his children. It had begun reaching other households, too.

People who had once been strangers to Abdul had helped him take a step toward independence. He, in turn, created opportunities for others.

It was a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest impact of helping one person is what that person can go on to do for someone else.

A Father’s Love Was at the Center of It All

Behind the headlines, the fundraising campaign, and the businesses was a father who wanted to give his children a better life.

Abdul’s story resonated with people because it showed something universally understandable: a parent who keeps going, even when circumstances make every day difficult.

He wasn’t asking the world to make him famous. He was trying to earn money to provide for his family.

And when people offered him an opportunity, he worked to turn that opportunity into something lasting.

The money made a difference, but so did the chance to begin again—to build something, employ others, and imagine a future beyond the streets where he once sold pens.

His experience also showed how quickly an ordinary moment can reveal a story that might otherwise remain unseen. One photograph encouraged thousands of people to look beyond the image and recognize the person behind it.

The Power of One Small Act of Kindness

Abdul Halim al-Attar’s story reminds us that we don’t always know what another person is going through.

A person we pass on the street may be carrying responsibilities and worries we cannot see. Sometimes, a little understanding can make a difference. And sometimes, when compassion brings people together, its effects can reach much further than anyone expected.

One photograph brought attention to a struggling father. Thousands of strangers responded with generosity. And that generosity helped create opportunities not only for Abdul and his children, but also for people he later employed.

His story is a reminder that kindness isn’t only about giving someone money. It’s about helping someone find a way forward—and giving them a chance to build something of their own.

One photograph changed Abdul’s life. What he did with that second chance helped change the lives of others.

Sometimes, the smallest act of compassion can become the beginning of something much bigger.
