Viral Moments That Went Down In Airplanes And Airports

An airplane can act as something of a microcosm of humanity’s best – and worst – sides. There are heroic tales of bravery and fated meet-cutes on planes. And of course, the odd sense of community that arises between passengers randomly squeezed together in a confined space (often against a common enemy: the airline).

Yet travel can test anyone’s patience, and sometimes people seemingly forget all norms and rules of society while focused on getting where they need to go. In the digital era, these moments – good and bad – can take on a life of their own. Many frequent fliers have found themselves famous (or infamous) overnight due to a controversial or wild travel moment that was captured on film.

Whether it was a case of an overzealous airline, a rude seatmate, or both, vote up the stories where the viral person is most definitively in the right. Vote down the ones where they were way out of line.

1A Woman Was Filmed After Refusing To Give Up Her Seat To A Child In 2024, Jeniffer Castro boarded a 50-minute flight in Brazil to find a child sitting in her pre-booked window seat. When Castro tried to get the child, who was looking out the window, to move so she could sit in her seat, they became upset. Castro’s refusal to swap seats with the toddler irked some of her fellow fliers, so much so that one began filming her, saying,I’m recording your face, this is disgusting… It’s the 21st century and people have no empathy for children. But when the video made the rounds on the internet, many were quick to jump to Castro’s defense, both for her right to sit in the seat she paid for and her right not to be harassed and filmed for it. As one Facebook commenter chimed in, “She is well within her right not to move! I’m sick of self-entitled parents.”Castro says she has since filed lawsuits against GOL Airlines and the passenger who filmed her without her permission:What should have been just an ordinary flight turned into an extremely embarrassing situation, exposing me unfairly and causing consequences that affected both my personal and professional life.Castro said the child cried for the entirety of the flight and that his mother was “very rude” to her.Ranked #1 by 3,199 voters with a 98% upvote rate3,199 votesWhat do you think? On their side?
  • A Doctor Flying To See His Patients Was Dragged Off Of A Flight 2A Doctor Flying To See His Patients Was Dragged Off Of A Flight In 2017, passengers on a United Express flight out of Chicago, IL were asked to volunteer for a later one in exchange for compensation, to accommodate United employees that had to meet another flight. David Dao, a 69-year-old physician, at first volunteered, but backed out after learning the next flight wasn’t until the following day, as he had patients to attend to in Kentucky. Short on volunteers, the airline ultimately chose to remove Dao from the flight. Dao repeatedly declined to exit his seat due to his work the following morning. The infamous viral footage taken by fellow fliers showed Dao with blood running down his face being forcibly dragged off the plane by security, which left him with a concussion, two missing teeth, and a broken nose.United CEO Oscar Munoz initially sided with his employees and stated, “I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers,” in relation to the incident. After facing intense backlash on social media, Munoz eventually apologized and stated there would be a full investigation. Dao later received a financial settlement and two security officers were fired. Some media outlets were accused of victim-blaming Dao, while some questioned if the fact that Dao was Asian factored into how he was treated. Dao later recalled seeing the video of the incident for the first time, saying, “I just cried.” But he also stated that he forgave the officers, saying of the ordeal, I’m not angry with them. They have a job to do… The most important thing is the accident turned out the positive way… Airline business [is] willing to change policy.Ranked #2 by 1,833 voters with a 97% upvote rate1,833 votesOn their side?
  • 3A Passenger Was Moved After Asking Their Seatmate To Wear A MaskRedditor u/Lex_Mariner went viral for a post on the United Airlines subreddit, detailing an encounter on their flight:I had a wet-coughing, sneezing, nose dripping lady sit next to me. I asked her quite civilly if she would consider wearing a mask. She immediately went off on a loud “you have no right” tirade and pushed the call button. I was reprimanded by the [flight attendant] for just making such a request… “You CANNOT ask another passenger to mask up!” I was reseated to a middle seat near the toilets in steerage and the lady took over my economy-plus aisle seat (my spouse was left across the aisle from her and caught a similar cold a few days later–coincidence?!) After I was reseated, a large enforcer came on the plane to ask me “are you going to be a problem?” My new seatmates must have wondered what minor felony I must have committed. The writer clarified that they did have their own mask that they put on, and also had a spare which they offered to the woman. They also said, I understand coughing, sneezing and nose blowing may be due to allergies or other afflictions. I would have been comforted had she just said, “I have allergies.”The top comments suggested the poster should bring a complaint to United, especially after being removed from their premium seat. Others recounted similar stories, while one pointed out that OP had merely made a request: “Of course you can ask a sick person to wear a mask. They are not obligated to do so, but asking them to do the right thing is not improper…” Still, some commenters thought the passenger was only entitled to concern themselves with their own mask.Ranked #3 by 2,481 voters with a 94% upvote rate2,481 votesOn their side?
  • A Pilot's Passed Airport Note Caused Mixed Reactions4A Pilot’s Passed Airport Note Caused Mixed ReactionsAn anonymous pilot found internet fame from a napkin note he passed to Steph Bohrer, an influencer who was sitting at an airport table. Bohrer posted the note on TikTok, her overlaid text reading “I’m sitting at the airport and a pilot just placed this on my table & walked away.” The message reads: “I have seen the whole world and you are the most beautiful human [or woman] in it.”Bohrer captioned the video, “I didn’t even see his face.” While many commenters found the complimentary note romantic and excitedly asked for updates or encouraged a love story, others were quick to express skepticism. Some found it odd he’d left no follow up, with one saying, “He didn’t leave a number because he’s someone’s husband.” Others were sure it was a move he pulled “all the time,” with one insisting, “Former flight attendant here. You can be sure he’s doing that at every airport and probably has someone waiting for him to come home.”Whether a heartfelt gesture or a sleazy move, Bohrer later expressed her surprise at the note’s widespread attention and apologized to the mystery pilot: “I don’t think he wanted this to be on the news, and I’m really sorry. He just was giving me a compliment.”Ranked #4 by 1,024 voters with a 74% upvote rate1,024 votesOn their side?

She then informs Nurmagomedov that he must move to another seat or take a different flight.Nurmagomedov indicated the person who spoke with him was “very rude” and that he “agreed to assist.” He wasn’t sure why he was removed, but posted on social media it could have been “racial, national, or [an]other reason.” Frontier Airlines issued a statement responding to the incident:Customer Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was seated in an exit row, was asked multiple times if he was willing and able to assist in the event of an emergency.
